Up for offer this week is a beautiful Cameo art glass vase signed by Muller. The vase depicts a seaside scene that shows several fishing boats in the background with seagulls circling in the sky, presumably looking for cast off fish from the boats. The prominent subjects in this piece are a man and a woman that appear to be walking away from a docked boat.
Both people are carrying what looks to be fish or todays catch. The male figure appears to be looking over his shoulder back at the docked fishing boat, while the female figure is looking straight ahead and you can almost sense shes not looking forward to cleaning all the fish she is carrying. In the background you can see land and it appears to be raining in the far distance and perhaps the subject of this scene is that of the days fishing trip being cut short by the incoming rain. The striking thing about this piece is that when you view it from a distance, youd almost think you were looking at an old sepia photograph of this couple instead of a cameo glass - - - its quite remarkable. This signed Muller Vase stands 10 inches tall and is 4 inches wide at the widest spot. The foot of the vase appears to be black glass but is in fact a deep purple or amethyst glass this can be seen by holding the vase up to bright light. Im estimating this vase to be late 1890s to early 1900s based on the style of clothing the figures are shown wearing.The vase weights 1.5 Lbs. The bottom of the vase shows various colours swirled where the pontil would have been. See picture that shows this in natural light and a second picture shown with a flashlight shining from behind. As for damage, I can not find anything significant there are no chips, cracks, repairs or scuffs. There is one small spot towards the top of the vase that I believe is an air bubble in the glass and the surface of the bubble is either broken or rough See picture that shows this from 2 perspectives.
If I had to describe this mark in terms of size, saying a grain of sand or pin head would be very accurate. Picture # 10 shows two air bubbles but these are NOT damage - when viewed from the side, the etching on the vase is undisturbed in these spots. The vase has a total of 5 different colours this includes the principal cream background and the blue glass dot on one of the seagulls. We have included many pictures of the vase for review.
