Daum Nancy Dahlias Three Colour Cameo Vase c1900

An intercalary decorated vase by Daum Date : c1900 Origin : Nancy, France Colour : Umber and ruby over a powdered cased glass ground Pontil : Polished Glass Type : Lead Size : 16cms tall Condition : Excellent Restoration : None Weight : 345g. The manufacturing process was very convoluted. The internal clear vessel was blown and then covered in coloured glass powder, in this case red and burnt orange.

This has then been reheated and the next layer of glass has been applied. The outermost two layers coloured glass used for the cameo have been applied. The next stage is to apply a resists and acid cut the design. The high relief elements within the design are then cut and polished. I have been involved in the antiques business since 1971.

My career took a leap forward when I joined Bonhams in 1976. Some five years later I became head of the Decorative Arts department.
