Emile Galle French cameo glass art vase orange poppy leaf design 4 1/2 inches
Gallé (French glass company) created this beautiful petite cameo glass art vase with a poppy and leaf design. This piece was made in the classic techniques that Galle used involving cased an cameo glass. Cased glass was made of two different layers of glass of different colors, fused together by heat.
The first case of layer is made in a cold. When it is finished and cooled, a second layer is blown inside the first Then the piece is placed into the furnace, so the two layers fuse together.
Cameo glass was a means of decorating cased glass. The cased glass of two or more colors was carved with a diamond saw or etched with acid, so that the colors of the layer underneath were visible and created a design. This vase is indeed cased glass with the inner layer a clear glass and the outer layer a red-orange color.
The glass was carved down to the clear layer in parts leaving the floral design in the orange color. The signature "Galle" was also carved and the glass was finished with an acid etching creating the frosted look of the glass. The floral design is asymmetrical and has lovely details. The vase is in wonderful condition with no chips or cracks, but may have some minor surface wear and/or factory imperfections.
