Genuine Emile Galle Multi-layer Cameo Glass Vase, 1904-1906, Signed, Lake Sunset

Genuine classic Emile Galle' multi-layered glass vase depicting a beautiful lake sunset scene in acid cut-back cameo shades of dark brown, caramel, lemon yellow, white and light blue. The scene shows fine detail in the silhouetted foreground trees and the reflections in the water of the scenery in the distance.

This vase was made between 1904 and 1906, as indicated by the "star" Galle' cameo signature, which was used for items made after Emile Galle's death as a tribute to the master ref. Glass by Galle', by Alastair Duncan and Georges de Bartha, pp 209-210.

His widow announced her decision to retain all his employees; designers, modellers, engravers, sculptors and artisans. With the help of these devoted collaborators and thanks to the inexhaustible collection of projects and studies accumulated by Galle' himself, I will continue to produce the works of art and the techniquess which have made him renowned... She placed the direction of the firm under her son-in-law, and the Galle' factory's artists continued to produce glass art works signed Galle' using his designs and innovative acid-etching techniques until it closed in 1931 (Duncan and de Barthas, pp 141-142). This outstanding high-shouldered ovoid vase stands 10 tall and 5 1/2 wide with a 3 1/4 mouth and a 3 base. It weighs about 3 1/4 pounds and has a smoothly ground pontil that shows the various layers of glass.

It shows no chips, cracks, breaks or repairs, and only minor scratches to the bottom from normal use. In finishing the vase, the maker appears to have carefully ground and polished.

Two spots in the outer surface of the acid-etched glass to remove some imperfection, such as an air bubble exposed by the acid etching process. One spot appears about one inch to the right and a half inch above the star Galle' signature, immediately to the left of the small foreground tree up to the far lakeshore area in the design. The second is in the exposed white sky area between two branches on the left side of the large foreground tree. These areas do not significantly affect the overall appearance of this outstanding piece of early 20th century French art glass.
